New research conducted in partnership with a large UK church has revealed some shocking findings about Christian dating culture. Samuel Verbi explains. Already half an hour over our minute interview, I was once again at a loss for an answer. In a church culture where marriage to another Christian is seen as the best and often only option, but with a ratio of single women to men, the situation for women like Rebecca can be problematic.
But while our solutions have typically been to ignore this conundrum, or to bury ourselves in the latest dating self-help books, we have yet to look at this issue objectively. It was for this reason that I started up the research partnership that I now run with a statistician in central London. And it was for this reason that I found myself researching Christian dating culture. Focusing on a large UK church with over 1, members, and collecting surveys from singles aged , I wanted to learn what this culture looks like from a statistical point of view, and what were the reasons behind these trends.
Over the subsequent weeks of analysis, the scenarios of single women like Rebecca appeared to be the norm. Over a two-year period, the normal experience of a single Christian woman was to be asked out by two non-Christians, one Christian in general and no Christians from her own congregation. Women were frustrated with the lack of dating occurring, and particularly with the lack of initiation from men.
Men are meant to be men! In any case it became apparent that there was frustration from one side of the group!

Sex, sex, sex! The church says abstinence is the only way to survive this single Christian life. So how do I, a single Christian woman, remain virtuous in a world where having sex and lots of it is seen as okay or even expected? And although I do not act on those sexual thoughts, I do still have them. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexual immoral person sins against his own body…You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.
So glorify God with your body. Even Matthew made sure to point out that lustful intent is still committing adultery in my heart Matt. But I rest in the knowledge that God is forgiving, and He is faithful. So, I keep repeating that Bible verse. Wretched woman that I am! Who will deliver me? We live in a world where sex sells.
But we can find comfort in the knowledge that through every temptation — every erotic book, every sexual innuendo, every sexually based film, and every suggestive commercial — God is there. For He promised that He would never leave us or forsake us Heb.
When I first thought of the title I was excited and ready to write. This is a blog post that requires me to be totally down-to-earth and honest. My life is far from perfect and I am far from perfect. So often we as Christian girls peek into each others lives and assume that somehow our story is harder. We look at each others lives and figure that, for whatever reason, the other girl has it easier.

Poor literacy means that few are able to read their bibles or Christian books. This is especially true for those trapped in poverty where, for too many, a proper education is not available. Women tend to spend time with their families, siblings and friends rather than with those from their church. Prayer triplets or duos are hard because people find it difficult to trust one another and share their lives intimately. Material needs can be very great.
This can lead to sin and a turning away from the church.

Being a single woman who has never been married and over the age of 40 puts me in a category all my own most days. I am more aware of it with each passing year. I still want to marry, but my attitude about marriage has evolved over the years. When I was young I thought of it as a duty or a job where I would have the responsibility of keeping a man and a family in line! Now I think of it as the opportunity to be a good partner and companion and I long for that.
The idea of being open to raising a family has faded.

Those numbers were similar to that of women in the Catholic Church 40 percent and among mainline Protestants 45 percent. Those numbers increased in Historically Black Protestant churches to 59 percent.
If I had more time and access to some stats software, I would crosstab these percentages with age in order to get a more complete picture.
